ChatGPT, one year on: a revolution underway but risks to be managed

A year ago, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, a generative artificial intelligence that surprised users with the fluidity of its human-machine dialogue. Since then, OpenAI has claimed a user base of 100 million per week for its AI solutions, although there has been some disruption to the company’s management.

Lack of trust among managers and employees

However, the early days of generative AI have been associated with a lack of confidence in the technology among executives and employees alike. BCG recently published a study on the subject, revealing that 52% of executives discourage the use of generative AI in their companies due to a lack of confidence in the technology and an absence of a clear strategy. Employees have also expressed fears about the impact of generative AI on their skills and jobs. For example, a survey conducted by SFL showed that employees feared that AI would not only generate documents that they would then have to correct, but that it would also eliminate clerical jobs.

90% of employees using AI reported a 40% increase in performance

BCG (Boston Consutling Group) also conducted a study on the impact of generative AI on the performance of its consultants. Although 90% of participants reported a 40% increase in performance compared to those not working with AI, the results revealed that AI produced errors in the context of complex problems. This led to a 23% drop in productivity on these tasks.

The responsibility and sovereignty of AI

Other questions remain unanswered, such as AI liability and sovereignty. In this context, the Kyutai laboratory, launched by Xavier Niel, Rodolphe Saadé and Eric Schmidt, was recently set up to develop AI in France with European values. This type of initiative is likely to see the light of day either in Belgium, and/or at European level.

ChatGPT is proof that generative AI is a powerful technology, but one that raises equally important questions, especially for companies wishing to integrate AI into their organization.

Stay tuned, Clevermint will be publishing another post very soon on concrete examples of AI use by companies.
